Season 1 finale! And it’s so big that we had to split it in two! We’re wrapping it up and bringing it all together. Lara Ash Pure Saud and Miguel talk about what is still missing and how to fill those gaps. There are some critical choices to be made (no not merchandising). So no nuts and bolts this time. The storyline needs visual continuity. But does it need flashbacks? How do the characters actually meet each other? And of course, finally naming things.

Lara Ash Pure Saud and Miguel come together again and with their powers combined they form SPECTRA! First up is logistics or nuts and bolts as they like to call it. Second is the mechanics of the worlds. After that it’s all about the characters and finally the quarttet tries to connect the dots of the first story arc. The nuts and bolts issue. SPECTRA regulars Saud, Ash Pure and Miguel get to the nitty-gritty of what actually needs to be done to get the open-source sci-fi adventure series produced. Creating universes, worlds, characters and stories is thrilling, exciting and fun but what needs to be done to get it all out there? SPECTRA is a multimedia project, a hypertextual thing. There’s is the podcast, but which formats should be used to present it all? Prose, radio play, comics, animation, games? How to we get people in and create with and without us? There’s a lot to do and someone’s gotta do it.

This time Miguel creates two new characters for SPECTRA: A Daoist higher intelligence in a robotic shell and a force field wielding shieldmaiden. Did someone say “Techno Viking”!? Bringing in more diversity, representation but at the same time contrasting expectations and stereotypes is a tricky thing.
Together with Ash Pure and Saud the conversation also is about inspirations like Neil Gaiman’s “American Gods”. But, the dangers of the writer’s room and getting lost in chatting about influences too much are there, too. Saud brings in the aspect of getting in secondary characters.

An artist and an academic sitting in a tree house in Berlin try to make a story to save the world. Comics creator Ash Pure and acute thinker thoughtism record the first episode of their open source story – SPECTRA
What is Spectra?
This question can be answered in many ways depending on context. Mostly, Spectra is a highly collaborative, open source story project. It is also a sci-fi adventure spanning multiple worlds that are populated by a myriad of complex characters. Characters who are continually placed in difficult situations in an attempt to explore current social concerns. The project is steered by a group who meet once week to discuss the concept, the fictional worlds and characters of Spectra, and what needs to be done so as to share its story with the world. These weekly conversations are recorded and shared. Actually, everything is shared: from written notes and typed scripts to audio plays, sketches, doodles, and finalized images and animations. For instance, you should be able to find the handwritten notes to this … somewhere (well, at least in theory).
The organizing principle of Spectra is episodic. This means that these recorded conversations discuss the creative and logistical issues of making a single episode of Spectra. Each episode is led by a guest “creator” — a central storytelling figure that we have invited to contribute. The basic rule is that every creator needs to be represented by a character or characters in the story. The creator is free to create or destroy, to advance or demolish concepts, characters and worlds within Spectra as they see fit. The goal is to have creators represent their own world view, their philosophical, religious, or intellectual orientations through the story. We hope this creates a creative dialogue between people with very different orientations and world views.
Since we are sharing all, everywhere, all the time, we are keeping an eye out for individuals or groups who are inspired to create their own content and engage with the worlds of Spectra. Be it on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, Reddit, or whatever, Spectra will go where you are. If we see something that inspires us, we will do our best to integrate it into the story world. Consider this an invitation for you to participate and to create with us.
We like to think of the entire project as a playground for ideas, for creative storytelling, and for thoughtful and meaningful discovery with others.

SPECTRA universe is a communally created story conceived with the specific intention of changing minds with comics.
To this end we translate real world belief systems and issues into our story world using a set methodology -The translation matrix.
Using this method we generate characters, worlds and story arcs in an attempt to talk about difficult subject matter in a safe science-fictionalised space with the intention of reaching people and engaging them as either active or passive participants in the story and in so doing maybe, just maybe saving the world.
